There is no such thing as people remaining the same. Everyone grows age-wise, but not every one does intellectually, emotionally, creatively and/or artistically. So there is change, just not always a favorable one. This relates to what might be called proportional change.
I believe we should understand art from this same perspective, as something that will inevitably grow age-wise (for the artist or for history). But if art doesn't grow in the other above-mentioned ways, then it will be an impoverished art.
In this sense, change or growth should not be understood in relation to progress, but in terms of a broad sense of experience.
